Ajo My local Mexican friends said "Ajo" means "garlic" in Spanish. The Phelps Dodge Corporation owned Ajo when I was growing up, and it was a thriving community with mining equipment that used the biggest tires that Goodyear ever made. Although this was an open pit COPPER mine, I have personally seen gold nuggets that came out of there that made a very comfortable handful. A victim of inflation which made the copper in a penny cost far more than the penny will ever be again, the mine is no longer in full operation. The town is south of Gila Bend, heading towards Old Mexico.
Chloride is the oldest continuously inhabited mining town in the state of Arizona. Nestled in a pocket of the Cerbat [sir-bat] Mountain Range, the town is at an elevation of 4000'. The name Chloride came from the silver chloride found in the hills among other minerals in the area. Today, silver chloride is used in photographic emulsions and antiseptic silver solutions.
Eloy:
Flagstaff is a community rich with cultural diversity, beauty, and history as well as amazing educational, recreational and scientific opportunities.
Gila Bend had a population estimate for July 1, 1998 of 1,754 and three old crabs. When I was young the town of Gila Bend only had two old crabs. I think Forey Hinderliter, Jr threw them out of town once or twice when he was on the police force but they just crawled back in. Gila Bend was just one mile long and two blocks wide back then if you didn't count the school complex. That began to change when the United States Air Force put in its target range south of town. Eddie Stout was still running cows on the target range in 1970. He lost a few head of cows occasionally and Louis Nesbitt said he had to run for his life out there a few times because the Jeep he was driving looked just like a discarded salvage unit by the same name.
Gilbert was named after the
property owner who sold his property to the railroad. His name was William
“Bobby” Gilbert. This progressive town was once a prime farming community,
fueled by the construction of the Roosevelt Dam and the Eastern and Consolidated
Canals in 1911. In the 1970s, the Town Council approved a strip annexation that
encompassed 53 square miles of county land. The population then was only 1,971,
but leadership was preparing for the growth they knew would occur. once known as
the Hay Shipping Capital of the World. Today, we are the fastest growing
community in the nation. In 1902, we were a small town that sprang up around a
rail siding for the Arizona Eastern Railway. Today the railroad tracks are still
there, as well as more than 135,000 people.
Globe-Miami, Arizona, a small mining community just east of Phoenix and north of Tucson. Mining began over 100 years ago when silver was first mined in the area. A huge ball of silver with many veins was dug up – this ball resembled a globe, and that’s how Globe got it’s name. Globe was founded in 1876 and incorporated in 1907, and Miami in 1918. Globe is the seat of Gila County.
Holbrook is a community rich in History, Family Values, Diverse Landscapes, Recreation, and Friendly Neighbors. Everything you are looking for in a home town.
Kingman Arizona was founded in 1882. Situated in the scenic Hualapai Valley between the Cerbat and Hualapai mountain ranges. It is known for its very modest beginnings as a simple railroad siding near Beale’s Springs in the Middleton Section along the newly constructed route of the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad.
Marana gets its name from a Spanish word meaning a jungle, a tangle or a thicket and was chosen as an appropriate name by the railroad workers of 1881 as they hacked their way through the dense brush. In March of 1977 the Town of Marana was incorporated with about 10 square miles. In August of that year the 1,500 townspeople elected their first town council. In early 1979 the Town began growing through an aggressive annexation policy and is now nearly 116 square miles with an estimated population of 18,000.
Nogales, and the Santa Cruz County region. Ghost towns, history and humming birds.
Prescott is the county seat of Yavapai County. Located in the mountains of north central Arizona and approximately 96 miles northwest of Phoenix, the City borders the Prescott National Forest to the south and west.
The town of Sells is near Ajo and hosts the Ah'Autmn tribal headquarters. My friend Tahutaputch spent the summer there one year with Agalonzo during the 50s and spoke in glowing terms of how fruitful the desert was. Ahnea Juee went there to learn basket weaving and the art of making pottery. When Elee Sam was chief of the same tribe -- but in Gila Bend -- he made many trips to Sells and he would tear up a car every year on those rough roads between Ajo and Sells.
Come visit Sierra Vista for it is here where you can lose yourself in the splendor of the magnificent Huachuca canyons; where you can watch Nature's most wondrous creations, the tiny hummingbirds as they sip nectar from flowers; and where you can visit a historic military post with its roots deeply embedded into the decades of Indian wars.
Sonoita is located at the crossroads of US Highways 82 and 83. We are surrounded by rolling, grass-covered hills and enjoy wonderful blue skies and wide-open spaces. Many people say this area "looks like Montana." Well, maybe. We love it here whether or not it does. We certainly have a lot less snow!
St. David Arizona, in the perfect area for Trail Rides. The trails have some of the most beautiful views imaginable and you can't help but feel the sensation of the Old West.
Tempe Arizona -- Following the establishment of Fort McDowell on the eastern edge of central Arizona’s Salt River Valley in 1865, enterprising farmers moved into the area. They dug out the irrigation canals left by the prehistoric Hohokam people and built new ones to carry Salt River water to their fields. Valley farms soon supplied food to Arizona’s military posts and mining towns. The first settlers to move to the Tempe area, south of the Salt River and east of Phoenix, were Hispanic families from southern Arizona. They helped construct the first two irrigation canals, the Kirkland-McKinney Ditch and the San Francisco Canal, and started small farms to the east and west of a large butte (Tempe Butte). In 1872, some of these Mexican settlers founded a town called San Pablo east of Tempe Butte.
Tubac was established in 1752 as a Spanish presidio (fort). Working artists' studios now surround the grounds which once served as the home for a Spanish military garrison. Tubac remembers its origins at the Tubac Presidio State Historic Park located in the village's Old Town, and no visit to Tubac is complete without a stop at our State Park. The web site is nothing short of spectacular.

Wickenburg, Arizona of the late 1800s was a rootin’-tootin’ boomtown reveling in silver, copper, and gold glory holes. Its residents, perhaps in excess enthusiasm, exaggerated the potential of wealth in the area to the point that it became common in the West to call any teller of tall tales a hassayamper, in honor of the Hassayampa River which flows through the area . . . that is, when it flows, as it is usually bone dry! The humor of the connection between the unique dry river and the tall tales told by those who resided near its banks inspired visitor Andrew Downing to write his famous Legend of the Hassayampa. (Note from Lin Stone: I've seen the Hassayampa River flow several times from bank to bank and it is not a flood you want to get into. In the aftermath I have shoveled tons of never-ending sand out of the river with a D-8 Caterpillar.)
Winslow is ideally located on I-40 at the junction of State Highway 87 in the high desert of Arizona’s northeastern plateau. The elevation is 4,850 feet. This peaceful town is centrally located on the western border of Navajo County, in the Little Colorado River Valley, less than 200 miles northeast of Phoenix.
Yuma is nestled in the Yuma and Gila valleys of southern Arizona, offering a climate that blends pleasant desert sunshine with the cool waters of the Colorado River. Our clean air affords residents and visitors alike a year round vista of surrounding rugged mountains. Ranked by Money Magazine as one of the top places to live in the United States, no wonder many of the people who visit our community one day return to raise a family, retire in comfort, or simply take advantage of being part of one of America's fastest growing cities.
