The Buffalo
River, America's first national river, begins its 132-mile tumble down toward the White River in the upper Ponca wilderness, some of the most remote and rugged country in the Ozarks. This stretch of the river is not suitable for floating, has little access and is mostly seen only by dedicated hikers. But the river reaches the historic Boxley Valley and begins a peaceful meandering that stretches the length of the long, narrow break in the hills before it begins its magnificent sweeps around the high limestone bluffs for which it is famous.

Come see the Arkansas Ozark Mountains.
An Outdoor Experience you will cherish for life.
Rivers, Whitewater, Hiking, and Climbing, are all here.

The Ozark National Forest covers more than one million acres, located mostly in northwestern Arkansas. The southern portion of the Forest runs along the Arkansas River Valley south to the Ouachita Mountains. The Ozark Mountains are actually plateaus, uplifted as a unit, with few folds or faults. The ruggedness of these mountains is due to erosion of the plateaus by swift rivers rising in them.

Arkansas has great climbing opportunities if you only know where to look. Mount Magazine, Sam's Throne, Fern, and Shepherd Springs are just a few worth mentioning now Besides the larger known climbing areas in Arkansas there is an abundance of unknown crags and never before climbed rock all over the state. You only need to know where to look, and some permission from Noah Trespassing most of the time.

When I was a young lad, Geet and Larry Wilson talked me into pooling our cotton picking wages so we could go to the White River and buy ourselves a houseboat. If I had only known how good a houseboat you can get, I'd have been the one that kept the money we pooled before they ran off with it.

I'll have to admit that since Rusty Logan left off being the editor and chief bottle washer here that I have only glanced at this paper occasionally.
