I found your site by accident looking for info on the Beebe Sale barn. My wife and I are frequent visitors to the flea market and look forward to it almost every weekend, when weather and work permits.

Your article hit the essence of what the Flea Market is all about....

Thank you for reminding me that I only have a day to wait until Flea Market day comes.

Susan and I live on a small farm north of Jacksonville. We both commute to Little Rock where she is employeed with Beach Title & Trust . I work as an Analyst for Baptist Health.

Though she was born in Detroit, she is a true Arkansas girl, living most of her life here. On the other hand, I was born and raised in Chicago, but have visited Arkansas since I was 12 years old.

Our meeting started when I was invited by my best friend to visit his Grandparents farm in Hartman. Little did I know that I would end up taking a liking to blonde haired Susan... Well I continued to join he and his family on these yearly trips and could hardly wait to see her.

In our teens we flirted a lot and teased. As we reached our early 20's we dated long distance, but soon found that not to work out.

Well eventually we went our own ways and took different directions. Only later in life finding out that Susan's mom thought her and I should have kept in touch and that she knew there was a magic between us.

After about 23 years and a bad marriage I was asked by my best friend Danny ( Her cousin) to visit the farm just to get away. Of course by this time his grandparents had passed and the farm was nothing more than 10 acres with the old house being used as a weekend getaway place. The rest being sold off by family members.

Well I agreed and thought his idea would be good medicine. The summer of 94 was terrible here and to make matters worse the old farm air conditioning unit bit the dust while we were there.

So we decided to drive to Tulsa to visit Danny's folks ( They retired from Illinois to there). We get there and they are packing the car to leave. They then asked if we would like to go to a last minute get together of all his family in Salisaw. Having nothing better to do and knowing these family members had a pool and ice cold beer we joined them. I had not seen some of these folks for 20 years and I looked forward to the day.

Well we get there and I start to get hugs and welcomes from these old friends when I realize that there is a familiar face across the room. Susan......... after 20 some years... and what a doll.....

I figured surely she must be here with her husband...... But NO, she is going thru a divorce as well...... hmmmmm..

Well we decide to head to the races and spend some time just chatting. As the day slowly comes to an end I find myself forgetting my troubles and having a wonderful time reliving some old memories.

All too soon, it's time to leave and I give her a hug goodbye and wish her the best.... Not even thinking she would be interested in me... We leave the get together and head towards Tulsa, before we have to leave for Illinois. The rest of the whole trip Danny teases me about Susan. He still hasn't grown up when it comes to that. He assures me that she was interested in me and I would be hearing from her... I shrug it off and just figure that won't happen.....

Well 2 days home I get a call from Danny saying that Susan wanted my number and he gave it to her. Being the prankster that he is I laughed it off. Less than 30 minutes later the phone rings and it's her.

She told me she could not stop thinking about me on her way back home and wondered if I had given her any thought.... Of course I had but never expected anything to come of it......(I did not tell her that, of course)

The phone calls and long love letters turned into expensive weekend flights to Little Rock and Chicago......  By Christmas of that year I knew I was still in love with my sweet little Susan.

We were engaged on St. Patricks Day , I relocated here in July and we were married October 28th. That was 7 years ago and we have both never been happier.

every July when we have our annual go to the family farm / fishing trip I just hug my friend Danny who is now my cousin-in-law. If it wasn't for him and fate I would not be here.

So whenever I am asked what brought me to Arkansas? I respond in my DEEP Southern Chicago accent, LOVE.......

Hope u enjoy my story as much as I did yours...

Mike
