Where in the world have you been?" she asked impatiently.

"DENMARK," he replied.

Her eyes rolled incredulously. "DENMARK?"

"Yes," he responded. "I went to DENMARK, and I thought I was lost, until I came out on Pepsi Cola Street."

Who says you can't get there from here? Arkansas is only 240 miles long
by 275 miles wide, but you can go around the world in eight different ways!
Not only can you visit DENMARK, but you can find ENGLAND, EGYPT,
SCOTLAND, GREENLAND, FORMOSA, CONGO, HOLLAND, JORDAN,
and SWEDEN inside these borders.

Local names rise from the mists like dreams from the past. The lush, green paradise which was Arkansas beckoned to many different kinds of dreamers looking for a SWEET HOME. When German immigrants gave STUTTGART its name what was more natural than to name the next two towns ULM and ROE, just like they were used to finding them back home?

A town named BERLIN is found here too. But so is BISMARK, HAMBURG, MOSCOW, PARIS, LONDON, OXFORD, DUBLIN, DOVER, BELFAST, MELBOURNE, ATHENS, CARTHAGE, GENOA, HAVANA, MANILA, SONORA, ABERDEEN, VICTORIA, WATERLOO, and LISBON.

Then, Arkansas has its own versions of ATLANTA, AUGUSTA, AUSTIN, BOSTON, BUCKEYE, CARLISLE, CHARLESTON, CINCINNATI, CLEVELAND, COLUMBUS, CONCORD, CORNING, DALLAS, DAYTON, DECATUR, DENVER, DOUGLAS, EL PASO, FARMINGTON, FLORENCE, FRESNO, GUERNSEY, HOUSTON, NASHVILLE, NEWARK, OMAHA, ONEIDA, PORTLAND, POUGHKEEPSIE, PRESCOTT, MONTICELLO, PRINCETON, PROVIDENCE, PROVO, SALEM, (Salem was liked so well there are three of them in the state!) SARATOGA, SCRANTON, SHERWOOD, SIDNEY, SOUTH BEND, TRENTON, TUPELO, WEST POINT, WINSLOW, and of course, HOLLYWOOD.

Bible toting pioneers searching for the Promised Land founded places like PALESTINE, BETHEL, CANAAN, MACEDONIA, PISGAH, CORINTH, MOUNT JUDEA, MOUNT OLIVE, MOUNT ZION, ANTIOCH, JERICHO, BETHESDA, JERUSALEM, AMITY, ST CHARLES, ST. FRANCIS, ST. JAMES, Good Samaritan Village, ST. JOE, ST. PAUL, PATMOS, VAIL, WESLEY, NIMROD, CHRISTMAS, TARRY, TEMPLE, Galatia, THEBES, and DAMASCUS.

Other Places with familiar faces include OHIO, OLD ALABAM, LITTLE ITALY, NEW CALEDONIA, NEW EDINBURG, DIXIE, and DELAWARE.

DUMAS, EMERSON, WALDO, INK, READER, MAGIZINE, and STORY, may represent the literary tastes favored in Arkansas.

When it comes to emotions there is nobody more natural. If you leave SEARCY, Arkansas via Pleasure Street the first towns you reach are JOY and ROMANCE. You will also find lots of DELIGHT, EROS, HARMONY, HOPE, and HEART in this little state, not to mention OKAY, FRIENDSHIP and SUCCESS.

Speedballs can go to HASTY, spread a sandwich at BUTTERVILLE, and toss a salad at PICKLES GAP and TOMATO.

OUACHITA was named for an ancient Indian tribe. Other places with Indian names include MOCCASIN GAP, OSCEOLA, OGEMAW, CADDO GAP, CHEROKEE VILLAGE, CHOCTAW, CHICKALAH, HIWASSE, IUKA, KOKOMO, MOUNT SEQUOYAH, OSAGE, OKOLONA, WAR EAGLE, POWHATAN, INDIAN, and POCAHONTAS.

Even the name "ARKANSAS" is supposed to be derived from the Algonquin name for "downstream people."

Several Arkansas counties honor great U.S. Presidents, including CLEVELAND, LINCOLN, JEFFERSON, MADISON, MONROE, GRANT, POLK, JACKSON, and VAN BUREN.

INDEPENDENCE County, named for the Declaration of Independence is the only county in the nation honoring this great document. National heroes and statesmen such as Gen. Robert E. LEE, General LAFAYETTE, Commodore O.H. PERRY, Count Casimir PULASKI, Benjamin FRANKLIN, and Zebulon PIKE also had counties named for them.

WASHINGTON naturally has a town named after him, while the town of HECTOR was named after Grover Cleveland's bulldog, but New York Governor DeWitt Clinton had the town of CLINTON named after him, and the town of De WITT too.

MOUNT VERNON, beloved home of George Washington is reproduced locally. Heroes like BEN HUR, Davy CROCKETT and James BOWIE have towns named after them. BOONEVILLE puts Daniel on the map too.

And Arkansans must have loved walnuts. They have towns named WALNUT CORNER, WALNUT HILL, WALNUT RIDGE, and WALNUT SPRINGS. Other trees glorified there are ALMOND, HUMNOKE, HICKORY PLAINS, LONOKE, WILD CHERRY, CHERRY VALLEY, PINE BLUFF and WILLOW.

For flower lovers there are towns named: DAISY, DARDONELLE, PANSY, ROSE BUD, ROSIE, TULIP, POSSUM GRAPE, Velvet Ridge, and VIOLET HILL. You'll also find HOLLY GROVE, STRAWBERRY, BERRYVILLE, RYE and SAGE here.

The birds of a feather who flock together in this state include: EAGLE, CROWS and FALCON. You will also find SWAN LAKE, BIRDEYE, BIRDSONG, and BIRDTOWN.

COW SHOALS, BASS, BASSET, BEAR, Cougar Neck, BEAVER, DEER, HOGEYE, Bucksnort and TOADSUCK represent the animal kingdom

Some names were just too good to pass up, even though someone else in the state already had them. For example, there are 12 different places called Oak Grove, there are 5 different CROSSROADS, 4 different MIDWAY towns, 2 named MORNING STAR, 2 PICKENS, 2 RONDOs, 2 SPRINGHILLs, 2 SULPHUR SPRINGS, and 2 WILSONs --among other places that share names.

The town of ROVER is there for people who just can't sit still. There is an EXCELSIOR, a BARBER, a BOY, with CASH to spend at VENDOR for SAMPLES; a BEVERAGE TOWN, a NAIL to DRIVE, and BLOOMER. Just for good measure, look for the towns of BACK GATE, BALD KNOB, CALICO ROCK, COZAHOME, DOGPATCH, REPUBLICAN, SEATON DUMP, SNOW, SNOWBALL, SOCIAL HILL, BEAULAH, STRONG, SUNSET, SUPPLY, TWIST, SALESVILLE, WINCHESTER -- why, Arkansas even has STAMPS.

And, for people who really like
to get way out there,
there is one town in Arkansas
named OZONE.

These guys are big on numbers too. Among others they have towns named FIFTY-SIX, THREE FORKS, NUMBER NINE -- and just to make sure you don't run out of anything in the alphabet, Arkansas has a town named ZINC!

Plus, Over 1/3 of the people in the United States live within 10 hours driving time of Arkansas.

Historically, the European occupation of Arkansas began in 1686 when six men were left to build a French Trading Post on the Arkansas River near its confluence with the Mississippi. That means Arkansas got here before New Orleans, Baltimore, Detroit, and Biloxi.

Second, and here is the rub, the lessons invariably are a "So now you tell me!" kind of thing.

Naturally, not one
humble Arkansan wants to brag.

However, a polite request was made that this article mention a few other credits Arkansas has to rack up, to wit: Arkansas has the duck capital of the world, the rice processing capital of the world, the spinach capital of the world, the home of the crossbow, the world's largest state-owned fish hatchery, the world's largest state-financed manmade lake, the world's richest barrel race, the world's best steaks, the world's largest outdoor drama, the world's largest minnow farm, the world's largest air rifle museum, the world's largest watermelon festival, the most decorated Christmas house in the world, the world's only bauxite house, the world's largest frog jumping contest, the world's best duck caller, the world's oldest bug collection, the world's best duck caller collection, the world's largest supplier of triploid grass carp, the brick capital of the world, folk music capital of the world, the world's Novaculite capital, the world's record brown trout was caught there, the world's largest sundial, the best mosquito caller in the world, the quartz crystal capital of the world, World's largest stormwater pumping plant, the world's best spitter (47 feet, 7 inches), the world's only park where you can hunt diamonds and keep all you find, the world's largest supplier of triploid bass, chicken capital of the world, the world's largest greyhound racing facility, the World's longest unbroken levee, the world's largest Bible collection, the world's tallest stalk of corn was grown here, the world's largest soda float was made here,

and, except for that almost irresistible urge to be modest,  the greatest people in the world.

And in spite of all this, there is still room left over for 5 units of the National Park System, 47 state parks, 3 national forests, 600,000 acres of lakes, over 9,700 miles of streams, and over 18 million acres of forests, plus you can call 1 800 NATURAL to get more information on a few other things.

So, Go to Arkansas and see the Whole world Eight Different Ways! And, be sure to check out the town called WELCOME. Residents there have laid out the finest WELCOME carpet on earth, just for you.

Does this sound like a state you'd like to see?
